LA Galaxy's Gonzalez, DeLaGarza back change of Chivas USA ownership

LA Galaxy players believe that the change of ownership of fellow Californian club Chivas USA will only benefit the region.

Major League Soccer took control of the Goats from husband and wife team Jorge Vergara and Angelica Fuentes last week and have plans to sell the club to interested parties before the end of 2014.

It has been confirmed that Chivas will remain in Los Angeles but may move from the StubHub Center, which it shares with the Galaxy, to the LA Sports Arena site which is operated by the University of Southern California.

Upon hearing the news of the takeover, Galaxy defender Omar Gonzalez spoke positively about the changes that could be in place for Chivas while suggesting the alterations to the struggling club will be good for soccer in the SoCal area.

"I think it's great that someone else is going to get involved with the team and hopefully turn it around for the best," Gonzalez said on Friday.

"We want to see them do well. I don't want them to do bad every single year. We want them to be successful so the league can continue to grow and, obviously, so we can keep on having some great games. The fans love our games against each other."

AJ DeLaGarza also indicated that having a healthy Chivas USA side will enhance the current rivalry dubbed as the Super Clasico which has been dominated by the Galaxy with 11 wins from the past 14 meetings.

"There will always be a rivalry," DeLaGarza told reporters. "If there are two teams in the same city, you're so close to them - and they still have the same guys. You want to see a better turnout for them.

"That way when we do play them, it's a bigger rivalry. My first couple of years, it was packed crowds, sellouts when we played them. And now they have tarps [at Chivas home games covering seats behind the north goal and the upper deck on the east stands], and even when we're the home team, it's not an entire sellout.

"We need to get the rivalry back."
