Cahill, Emerton, Holman among Australian squad for WC qualifiers

Tim Cahill, Brett Emerton and Brett Holman were among the squad of 23 players who were selected for Australia's opening World Cup qualifiers next month. The Socceroos meet Thailand in Brisbane on September 2 and Saudi Arabia in Dammam four days later as they get their Asian qualifying for the 2014 Brazil World Cup under way.

Manager Holger Osieck has selected the 18 players who were in the squad for the friendly with Wales two weeks ago and added five more - Brett Holman (who withdrew from Cardiff with injury), Josh Kennedy, Mark Milligan, Sasa Ognenovski and Nathan Coe.

New Melbourne Victory signing Harry Kewell was left out by Osieck as he gets back to full fitness following some time out of the game after his contract with Turkish club Galatasaray expired.

The Socceroos will begin to assemble in Brisbane on Monday 29 August ahead of the Suncorp Stadium match which will be the third A-International between them and Thailand.
