Young, Petrov hoping MacDonald stays in Villa role

Aston Villa's unlikely goalscoring hero Luke Young and captain Stiliyan Petrov have both revealed they want current caretaker manager Kevin MacDonald decides to remain in the job.

MacDonald has been in charge of the squad since Martin O'Neill's shock departure on the eve of the Premier League season and the players are right behind him in retaining the job.

"The boys respect Kev. He's got great football knowledge and we all think he can do the job," Young, who scored his first goal in two years in the 1-0 win over Everton, told Sky Sports 1.

"It's up to Kev whether he puts his name forward. We will have to see what happens in the coming week."

Petrov added: "It (uncertainty) has not helped but we just need to go out and perform. We think he (MacDonald) deserves the job and we hope that he takes it."
