Yoshida opens scoring but Southampton goes down to West Ham

Maya Yoshida scored his first Premier League goal for Southampton on Saturday.

The 25-year old Japanese defender opened the scoring for the Saints in the eighth minute of their eventual 3-1 loss to West Ham United at Upton Park.

Yoshida got on the end of Steven Davis' free-kick, heading home to give the south coast club an early advantage in east London, but the visitors were unable to maintain their lead.

Matt Jarvis and Carlton Cole gave the Hammers a 2-1 lead by the 23rd minute before Kevin Nolan wrapped it up for the home team with just under 20 minutes left.

Yoshida, who joined Southampton from Dutch club VVV-Venlo in August 2012, has started the past six matches in the absence of Dejan Lovren for a total of eight Premier League outings this season.

The loss was the Saints' first in seven league outings and saw them drop to ninth on the table, a point behind Newcastle United, who beat Aston Villa 1-0 on Sunday.
