Adil Rami has paid a glowing tribute to fellow France World Cup winner Olivier Giroud.

The Chelsea striker failed to score through the tournament, but Rami insists his teammate can be proud of his contribution.

The Marseille stopper said: "He's Gladiator! The guy is fighting all the time. Alone up front, he takes it full in the jaw from the defenders of the opponents and returns to the fight. Those who say he is useless do not understand anything about football! All he does is for the good of the team.

"His role is crucial for us. He is essential to our style of play.

"We defend better thanks to him. Olivier is a very mature guy and he is really appreciated in the group. Everyone knows how important it is."
