World Cup 2018: Messi penalty saved as dominant Argentina held by Iceland

Iceland have again stunned the world by holding on to secure an historic 1-1 draw against Argentina at Spartak Stadium in Moscow.

Argentina came into the contest looking for vengeance for their 2014 World Cup Final heartbreak, with five players from that starting eleven selected for this clash, including star man Lionel Messi.

Iceland's story coming into the match was a totally different one. Playing in their first ever World Cup, the side that captured hearts with their giant killings and viking clapping at Euro 2016 came into the clash looking to make an impression on the world's grandest stage.

Bjarnason had the first golden opportunity to shock the world, nearly capitalising from a poor Willy Caballero clearance in the game's opening stages. He was presented a free shot on goal, but panicked and put it wide.

Argentina went on to stamp their authority on the game, dominating time on the ball and eventually going ahead thanks to Sergio Aguero, who struck home his first World Cup goal with a classy pirouette inside his penalty area.

Mere minutes later though, Iceland did what they do best and proved that no matter how big the odds, you can't count anyone out in the World Cup. After a goalmouth scramble, Finnbogason put home the first goal in Icelandic World Cup history to put his side back on level terms.

Going into half time, Argentina had 75 percent possession but had little to show for it, with scores level at 1-1.

After the restart of play, Javier Mascherano continued to dominate through midfield, and at the hour mark had completed more passes than every other Iceland player combined. He looked best player on the field as the Icelandic defence worked hard to keep Messi quiet.

Despite Argentina's dominance, Iceland held on valiantly to not concede. That was until the 64th minute, when luck seemingly fell in Argentina's favour as they were awarded a penalty following a clumsy challenge.

The script was laid out perfectly, Lionel Messi was over the ball, and he would surely score to give his side the win and further cement his legacy as the greatest of all time.

His spot kick was saved.

Later with the final kick of the contest, Lionel Messi stood over a free kick in a good position. He summed up his day by blasting his attempt into the wall, missing his tenth shot for the game.

Goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson was the unlikely hero after a phenomenal penalty save in a game that completely defied logic and expectations. Somehow, despite dominating possession and having a chance to win from the spot, Argentina dropped points.

Iceland held on to claim a point in their first game of World Cup football, with the score finishing 1-1.
