WORLD CUP 2018: Australia alive after holding Denmark

Denmark and Australia have battled to an entertaining 1-1 stalemate in Samara.

Denmark were the dominant side early, putting the Socceroos under intense pressure right from kickoff. Tottenham Hotspur star Christian Eriksen made the most of the Dane's hot start, capitalising off a turnover to hammer home the opener with just seven minutes played.

Australia went on to settle the game down, and started to get on top by dominating play down the wings, with Josh Risdon and Aziz Behich attacking well from fullback.

The Socceroos went on to have their best chance yet at the half hour mark, as Matthew Leckie, who was one of the best players on the pitch, did well to beat a couple of defenders before passing off to Robbie Kruse who blasted his shot into a Danish centre-half.

After continually putting the Denmark defence under the pump, Australia finally found a stroke of luck, with the VAR providing a helping hand.

Having been on the wrong side of the VAR against France in their opening game, the Socceroos were more fortunate this time when it was adjudged that Poulsen had committed a handball inside the penalty area.

The ever reliable Mile Jedinak stepped up and sent Kasper Schmeichel the wrong way, putting the Australians level and giving them the equaliser they'd worked so hard for.

The second half again started with Denmark looking comfortable, but they couldn't score this time before the Australians settled play back down.

Looking for a spark of inspiration, exciting youngster Daniel Arzani was substituted on for Robbie Kruse after the hour mark.

The Socceroos were dominating, and nearly went ahead with Mooy and Rogic going within inches of the winning goal with 20 minutes to play.

Unfortunately for Australia their night soured when striker Andrew Nabbout dislocated his shoulder at the 73 minute mark and was forced from the field in incredible discomfort.

With their momentum stifled the game fizzled out, and the score finished at 1-1.

Denmark have now put themselves in a good position to qualify for the Round of 16 with four points, but they must face France in their final match. The Socceroos are now placed third in the group with one point, but they will Peru in their final match with the added advantage of only having a goal difference of -1.
