Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has assured Wayne Hennessey his chance will come this season.
Marcus Hahnemann has surprisingly usurped Hennessey for the first-team berth between the sticks.
But McCarthy told the Birmingham Mail: "I think at a really tough time Marcus came in and gave us that composure, that steadiness and that experience that was required. Wayne was playing terrific for his time and I brought Marcus in for that reason - experience.
"Wayne has got the No.1 on his back but Marcus knew that and came in prepared to fight for his spot.
"I didn't think any one of the players, certainly not many, would get in the team and stay there all season. They all need competition.
"I think Wayne will come back from it better still for having a break."
