Wilson: Newcastle takeover has lifted entire city

Newcastle United star Callum Wilson believes that the club's takeover lifted the spirits of everyone in the area.

The forward has been outstanding for the Magpies in recent years, but their form as a team was not as impressive before the Saudi Arabia-backed takeover.

However, since the deal was concluded and Eddie Howe took over from Steve Bruce, Newcastle have not looked back.

Wilson said, per Chronicle Live: "It feels like yesterday when the takeover happened. It's a complete turnaround. It's been a transition definitely. You are starting to see better players come in the door, more money being spent on players and better competition.

"I think it's important and healthy. The feel around the place has changed in the last year. The cloud has been lifted over the club. I always said that this club was a sleeping giant and it feels like it's starting to wake now. It's all positive and going in the right direction."

Wilson added: "You know that the club have invested in the squad and you have got confidence in all the players that are around you. You look around the dressing room and there's such talented players. You are confident with your starting line up, with your subs and everybody is playing 10 or 15% more.

"Before that you could expect to start and it is human nature just to relax. That's not the case now. The manager has come in now and the culture and philosophy has changed. I can only see positive things coming from it."

Regarding boss Howe, Wilson said: "I had full faith in him coming here and making an impact. I have worked with him before obviously.

"For six or seven years and I know what he brings, work ethic, that filters down through the football club. I think when the takeover happened he was the perfect man for the job. You could go foreign and then all of a sudden you are not getting the best out of your current English players because you did have a strong English core to start with.

"And this manager has taken it to it like a duck to water. Now we are seeing better results and I don't think there is a better manager for the job."
