Wigan's McCarthy pulls out as West Brom's Long, Sunderland's McClean among Republic of Ireland squad for Euro2012

Giovanni Trapattoni has named his Republic of Ireland squad for this summer's European Championships.

The Italian has lodged a list of 23 players to represent Ireland at the tournament in Poland and Ukraine starting in June. RoI were drawn in Group C alongside reigning Euro champions Spain, Italy and Croatia.

Trapattoni has named the likes of West Bromwich Albion striker Shane Long, Sunderland young gun James McClean, LA Galaxy star Robbie Keane and Aston Villa goalkeeper Shay Given.

Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy withdrew from the original squad after his father was diagnosed with cancer.

"I have made the very difficult decision to withdraw my name from selection for the Euro 2012 squad following the diagnosis of my father with cancer and an on-going requirement for treatment," he said.

"I have discussed this with the manager. He was very understanding and I thank him sincerely for that."
