Wigan Athletic are ready to hand midfielder James McCarthy a new deal.
McCarthy, 19, is a big favourite of Latics boss Roberto Martinez and impressed during his debut season in the Premier League last year.
Now the Spaniard is set to reward the Irish international by doubling his wages from £7,000-a-week - although the Wigan board will insist on inserting a pay-cut clause should the club get relegated.
McCarthy told the News of the World: "When I joined last summer, I signed a five-year deal and I'm happy with that. But there has been talk about a fresh contract. Basically, I'm taking it as it comes.
"The bottom line is I'm happy here. It is a very good club to be at, a friendly and family-orientated place. Last season went well but look, I need to get my head down and work hard to stay in the side."
