Wally Downes is set to join West Ham United.
The Daily Mail says Downes is set to be named as Avram Grant's No 2 at West Ham in the next few days.
The 49-year-old's appointment follows the sacking of Zeljko Petrovic earlier this week after just four months in the job.
Joint owners David Sullivan and David Gold are hoping Downes will help Grant move the east London club off the bottom of the Barclays Premier League.
He has been lined up to work on a West Ham defence that has already leaked 25 goals this season.
Downes has been out of work since he was dismissed as a member of Alan Pardew's backroom staff at Southampton in August.
The former Wimbledon midfielder was also a member of Steve Coppell's coaching staff at Reading after nearly two years in charge at Brentford where he was sacked in 2004.
