The Evening Chronicle says the right-back is out of contract in East London at the end of the season, and reports are suggesting he could work with manager Sam Allardyce for a third time.
The 30-year-old Republic of Ireland international played for him at Bolton Wanderers as well as the Hammers.
Sunderland have signed three right-backs this season, yet it remains a problem position.
