West Ham chief Sullivan: 'Southampton have got fantastic value at £4m' for Austin

West Ham United co-chairman David Sullivan believes that Southampton have got themselves a real bargain by signing Charlie Austin for just £4million.

Sullivan has been critical of Austin due to his injury record and had recently stated that signing him for £12million would be a huge risk.

Now Sullivan has gone on to clarify his views on former QPR ace Austin and has stated that the Saints have conducted very good business by signing the striker for a fraction of that cost during the January transfer window.

Sullivan wrote in the match programme ahead of Tuesday night's clash against Aston Villa: "Our next league game is away at Southampton and I just want to clarify my views on the Charlie Austin situation.

"Contrary to reports, he is a player I have always greatly admired and his climb through the divisions is inspiring.

"I once said at £12million he was a gamble, with his injury record. However, if his financial demands are reasonable, Southampton have got fantastic value at £4m.

"Had I known he was available at that price, I would have taken the gamble myself — and I am sure half the Premier League clubs would have as well."
