West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini has told Declan Rice to follow his heart over his international future.
London-born Rice, 19, came through the Irish youth ranks and appeared three friendlies for Martin O'Neill's team but is considering a switch after an approach from England.
"He has a big problem but I think that his heart must decide if he feels more Irish or more English," said West Ham manager Pellegrini.
"Maybe it can be easier for him to play for Ireland. With England he will have big competition but I think he is able to take that challenge.
"If you trust in yourself and you feel you are an English player, it is a personal decision. He must take the decision himself."
