West Ham boss Pellegrini eager to bring through more youngsters

West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini is eager to bring through more young players.

Declan Rice and Grady Diangana are reaping the benefits of working under the experienced Chilean.

“Everything has changed in so many years," Pellegrini told whufc.com. “We need an ambitious mentality and we must continue exactly the same as 30 years ago. Now, when a player wants to be the best, they must work.

“In every team that I managed, there have been players who didn't reach their potential. There are a lot of players who think they are ready when they are just starting. For me it is the most difficult moment in the career of the player when you are just arriving, you must still demonstrate the next step. It will be difficult for you to do it because when you arrive two or three things you do during the game, all the fans will applaud you and be very happy.

“After that we demand more, with goals, passes and 90 minutes of running. In every day they work in the week, they must have that mentality."

Rice and Diangana have both signed new long-term contracts in recent weeks and, while Pellegrini says both players deserved their respective deals, he is eager they continue to put football above financial goals.

“The money is important," he said. “That's why when you sign a new contract, you must understand that you are just arriving. But if you are just going for the money, you will never be a good professional. When you work well, the money arrives along with it. His mind must be not in the amount of money or the contract, young players must have their mind on improving."
