Big Sam wrote in the London Evening Standard: "I celebrate, if that's the right word, my 60th birthday on Sunday but as they say, it's only a number.
"If I look back over my life, I've been blessed really. I was fortunate enough to marry Lynn when I was 20 and now I have two children and four grandchildren.
"Other high points have been achieving my dream of becoming a professional footballer at Bolton, then getting into the first team there.
"That was a huge pressure. It wasn't an environment like it is now. When you were a youngster then you mopped the dressing rooms, you picked up the dirty kit, you cleaned the boots, you swept the terraces and you cleaned the manager's car - twice if it wasn't clean enough the first time.
"You also saw players one year older than you crying their eyes out because they had been released and didn't know what they were going to do with their lives.
"I made that first team, though, and when I was a regular, we won promotion."
