West Bromwich Albion manager Valerien Ismael is targeting Barnsley star Alex Mowatt.
The club's skipper had a chance to become the highest paid player in the club's history, per The Mirror.
However, he has turned down a contract offer at Oakwell and will now become a free agent.
The 26-year-old has a chance to reunite with old boss Ismael, who recently left Barnsley to take over at the Baggies.
Barnsley released a statement saying: "We can confirm that captain Alex Mowatt has now left Oakwell upon the conclusion of his contract.
"A key player in each of the last three seasons, a regular under three separate head coaches, Alex's efforts were exemplary and the club entered discussions over an extension to his contract at the earliest juncture.
"Despite the most lucrative deal ever offered to a Reds player, Mowatt has decided against extending his Oakwell career.
"We would like to thank Alex for his dedication and professional attitude, particularly as captain over the last two seasons and wish him well in his future endeavours."
