Werner relieved to end goal drought as Chelsea reach top-four with Newcastle victory

Timo Werner ended his goalscoring drought to help Chelsea claim a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues are now fourth on the Premier League table, ahead of West Ham United on goal difference and two points in front of reigning champions Liverpool.

Werner also grabbed an assist in the match, helping Olivier Giroud score Chelsea's opening goal after 31 minutes.

Monday was exactly 100 days since Werner had scored from Chelsea, and the German rather fittingly broke the 14-game goalless streak when he scrambled in a flick-on at the back post.

Kepa also made his first league start for Chelsea since 17 October, keeping another clean sheet in his second successive outing.

Thomas Tuchel remains undefeated in his six games in charge of Chelsea, who are now firmly in the race for the top-four places.

Newcastle on the other hand are in serious trouble as they loom just seven points above the drop zone with 14 games remaining.

18th-placed Fulham have found some form recently, picking up a valuable away win over European hopefuls Everton on Sunday.

Speaking after the game, Werner was relieved to end his goal drought.

He said: "Happy that I scored finally and there's still a long way to go but if we keep going like this is will be a good end for us.

"As a striker you always want to score, the last month was hard I was not happy with not scoring. But at the end it's a team sport, when we win everything is good. Helping my team with assists and glad I scored today.

"For a striker it's worse when you can't get in the right situations and have the chances. I've had a lot of chances which I've missed, my team brought me a lot of situations where I could score today, when I keep going the goals will come like today and the assists as well."
