Werner bags brace as Chelsea cruise past Rennes

Timo Werner scored two penalties as Chelsea claimed a 3-0 win over Rennes in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The Blues are now top of Group E, ahead of Sevilla on goal difference, and look poised to qualify for the knockout rounds.

Frank Lampard's side got off to a great start when Werner was fouled inside the box by Dalbert after 10 minutes of play.

The German converted past Alfred Gomis and would do so again just before half-time after a controversial handball decision.

Dalbert was given his second yellow-card for a harsh handball call, which resulted in a penalty for Werner.

Tammy Abraham scored 10 minutes into the second half after connecting on a superb first-time cross from Reece James.

Edouard Mendy, signed from Rennes in the summer, kept his fifth consecutive clean sheet for the Blues.

The Premier League side will next play Sheffield United on Saturday.
