Kenny Cunningham's potential World Cup berth could be in doubt after he sustained a foot injury on Thursday night.
The Wellington Phoenix winger was injured in the 5-1 A-League loss to Adelaide United with early reports suggesting he has broken a bone in his foot.
"It looks like one of the small bones in his foot which is pretty painful," Phoenix coach Ernie Merrick said.
Cunningham, who has scored six goals for the Phoenix this season, is in Costa Rica's preliminary squad ahead of the Brazil tournament but was not selected by manager Jorge Luis Pinto for the March 5 friendly against Paraguay in San Jose.
He has played 10 times for Los Ticos with his last appearance coming off the bench in the January 26 loss to South Korea in Los Angeles.
Phoenix teammate Carlos Hernandez, who has played 36 times for La Sele, also missed selection for the Paraguay meeting.
