Wellington Phoenix land former Ajax striker Sarpong

A-League club Wellington Phoenix have pulled off a major coup in the form of signing Dutch striker Jeffrey Sarpong.

The New Zealand outfit have landed the 27-year-old after he was released by NAC Breda at the end of the 2014/15 Eredivisie season.

The arrival of the Ajax academy product, who has also spent time with NEC Nijmegen, Real Sociedad and Hercules, has been welcomed by Phoenix head coach Ernie Merrick.

"It has taken a while but it can take a while when you are after better players," Merrick said.

"We had some tough competition but we persisted and in the end got our man."

Sarpong links up with former Ajax teammate Roly Bonevacia in Wellington and was thrilled to make his new home alongside a friendly face.

"It will be a challenge for me but I have a good feeling about the manager," he said.

"I don't know much about the A-League apart from what Roly has told me.

"I have had a lot of conversations with Roly because we are good friends and he told me about the league and what the Phoenix club was like."
