Watford have tabled a bid for Lille midfielder Thiago Maia.

Newcastle United have been pursuing a deal for the Brazilian for much of the summer, but Lille's €25m valuation has turned them off.

Le 10 Sport says Watford have now stepped in with a €20m cash bid.

Lille are softening their stance, with Watford confident of striking terms some time today. But the player will still need convincing.

Maia would prefer to play for Rafa Benitez at Newcastle United.
