Watford hero John Barnes is backing his old club to beat Manchester United this weekend.

But he is unsure whether this is an ideal time to face the wounded Red Devils.

He told the Daily Star: “It's a good time because of the supposed problems but then Manchester United will say, 'let's show people who are now writing us off' so it could be a bad time to play them.

“What we know is they've got a good manager with a great team and great players.

“If they get it right and perform they can beat anybody so only time will tell if it's a good time or not.

“The good thing from Watford's point of view is they'll play with confidence, particularly having beaten Tottenham at home having come from one-nil down.

“They'll be confident, they're well organised but you'd still expect a top performance from Manchester United to be good enough to beat them but football's a funny game."
