Watch: Man Utd great Sir Alex unveils his statue at Aberdeen

Manchester United great Sir Alex Ferguson was in Scotland this week for the unveiling of his statue at Pittodrie.

Aberdeen have unveiled a statue to pay honour to their greatest manager.

The event was held at the Pittodrie Stadium on Friday and the sculpture was revealed to club officials as well as supporters.

Ferguson took charge of Aberdeen between 1978 and 1986 and won three league titles, four Scottish Cups, one League Cup and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1983 before taking the helm at Manchester United three years later.

A number of former players such as Gordon Strachan, Willie Miller and Neil Simpson were in attendance to reminisce on their success.

Ferguson also was present and received a standing ovation on his return to the club. Speaking to supporters, who packed out the Richard Donald Stand, the 80-year-old said: "It's a fantastic honour and you have to reflect my life that way because what I had achieved here at Aberdeen was almost a miracle."

Speaking about his team of that era, Ferguson added: "When you try to put a light switch together, if you don't get the wires in the right place, it's not going to work.

"I had the right material, they were all there. All they needed was the direction and desire, and they showed that eventually.

"It was an absolutely brilliant period for me.

"My first year was hard for me. My father had cancer. I decided to do a stupid thing and go to a tribunal with St Mirren, and these were learning lessons.

"Once I got that year over, I knew where I was going because I had the materials.

"The thing about human beings, some people want to go the moon on their holidays, some want to go to the local park.

"These boys wanted to go to the moon, they had the desire to be better and better. That gave me the incentive to work with them.

"Other clubs wanted to win trophies, we wanted to win it more than them.

"The desire to win more than others is the thing that will get you there.

"That was a fantastic period. I was so proud that I had eight and half years here."
