Demba Ba has suffered a potentially career-threatening broken leg while playing in the Chinese Super League.
The 31-year-old former Premier League striker sustained the injury in a regulation tackle from Sun Xiang as his Shanghai Shenhua beat Shanghai SIPG 2-1.
Ba's coach, Gregorio Manzano, suggested that he issue could perhaps force the conclusion of the Senegal international's playing days.
“It could end his professional career," said Shenhua head coach Manzano.
“I would rather lose the game than lose Ba."
Ba scored 43 goals in 99 Premier League outings for West Ham United, Newcastle United and Chelsea between January 2011 and the summer of 2014, prior to moving to Turkish club Besiktas.
Since joining Shanghai in June last year, Ba has amassed 27 goals in 36 appearances with 14 of those coming in 18 matches this season.
