Waddle exclusive: Spurs fans would love exciting Edwards re-signed - but would management?

Tottenham hero Chris Waddle has questioned whether the club's top brass would be willing to re-sign Marcus Edwards from Sporting CP.

Edwards left Spurs three years ago for Vitória de Guimarãs before joining Sporting this past January.

The attacking midfielder was impressive home and away against his former club in the Champions League group phase this season.

In the aftermath, Edwards was linked with a return to Spurs - which he himself was happy to talk up when speaking with English journalists.

Speaking to Tribalfootball.com on behalf of FreeSuperTips, Waddle admits he's a fan of the 23 year-old: "He's a good player and technically he was very sound.

"I think (Mauricio) Pochettino once called him the 'English Messi' and the lad has so much ability.

"He lost his way a little bit obviously and he's been around a few clubs, but he's found his home at Sporting Lisbon.

"He's playing as a false nine, technically he's very gifted and it's about putting a run together to find that consistency which he's found this season.

"I'm sure there will be clubs monitoring his situation, not just in England.

"Sporting sell players on as most teams in Portugal do, so there will be a lot of clubs interested.

"It will depend on any buy-out clause or price Sporting put on him."

However, Waddle feels if Edwards is to return to Tottenham, it will mean some at the club needing to eat humble pie.

He continued: "I don't know if he would come back to Tottenham because I don't think Tottenham would like to admit they've made a mistake.

"They won't want to pay a lot of money to bring someone back who they once had for nothing.

"Tottenham fans would love to watch a player like that because when he's on his game he's such an exciting talent.

"I think there will be a lot of clubs monitoring him over the next couple of seasons and if he keeps his form up then he'll get a lot of tasty offers and I don't think it'll just be from English clubs."
