Vitoria sees Philadelphia Union as fresh start after failed Benfica stint

Steven Vitoria will use his loan spell with Philadelphia Union in a bid to get his career back on track.

The 28-year old Canadian-born Portuguese defender has joined the MLS on a season-long loan from Benfica after failing to make an impression with the Primeira Liga giants.

Vitoria landed at Benfica from Estoril in 2013 and has now been given the chance to gain regular minutes after appearing in just five matches for the Eagles' first team which he is eagerly anticipating.

"I wish I had the answer for you," Vitoria told reporters.

"Benfica is a very big club in Europe. It was a good experience being a part of it, and I learned a lot.

"It was a coach's decision, and I didn't get that many minutes. It's all part of it, and you have to be prepared for that. It comes with the job."

Of the ever-increasing MLS, Vitoria added: "It's a very attractive league that's getting more competitive, you can tell.

"I'm very happy to be here and part of the Union. It's a very successful league, and it's going to keep growing and growing."
