Vitesse midfielder Martin Odegaard admits his hopes with Real Madrid haven't been met.
Odegaard became the youngest player to debut for Los Blancos in LaLiga Santander during the 2014/15 season, but hasn't exploded onto the scene as many anticipated he would have and has spent the last two seasons on loan in the Netherlands.
"I was hoping to have a place in Madrid," he said.
"I trained all summer and played a few minutes, but in the end the club and I decided that the best option for me was to play elsewhere."
Now at Vitesse, the player is not too disheartened by his distance from the Madrid first team.
"You have to be modest," he said.
"How many 19-year-olds are in the Madrid team?
"The road is long and I have confidence in myself and I know I have to work hard, learn in each game and put minutes together.
"My final goal is clear: to play for the club and renewing my contract is a gesture that I take confidence from."
