Vinnie Jones: Monk appointment best thing Cellino has done for Leeds United

Former Leeds United star Vinnie Jones has claimed that Massimo Cellino's appointment of Garry Monk as manager has been the club owner's best decision during his time at Elland Road.

The controversial Italian has now appointed seven different managers in his two years with the Championship club, which has prompted many to scratch their heads, but the arrival of former Swansea City boss Monk has been welcomed by Jones.

The 'Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels', 'Snatch' and 'Mean Machine' star, who won promotion with Leeds to the First Division in 1990, told the Daily Express: "I think (Monk) is a fantastic appointment.

"It really is a positive with all the negatives that have been going on there.

"You think Cellino is passionate about the club, is he, isn't he? What is he going to do to the club? Are his best interests in it? Only time will tell. But he's got to prove that to the supporters.

"My mate sent me a picture, I think they were at Port Vale, and there were thousands of Leeds fans at the last game of the season with nothing to play for. It's ridiculous support.

"They need to be rewarded, the fans.

"You've got to remember all these Euros, Champions Leagues, Premier Leagues and FA Cups are nothing without the fans.

"That club's fans deserve to be treated right and as long as Cellino is involved this is probably the best thing he's done since he took over."

Jones is hoping that the former Swansea manager will be given enough freedom at the club to stamp his mark on the West Yorkshire outfit.

"Garry's a very level-headed man," Jones added.

"He's been in the big hot seat and he seems to keep his cards to his chest.

"Hopefully he can be given the reins to do it his way. Leave it to football people."
