Villarreal are eyeing Tottenham defender Juan Foyth.
Marca says after Sunday's defeat to Everton, Jose Mourinho is reportedly interested in signing a new centre-back before the transfer window shuts next month.
If a new defender does arrive at Spurs, that could open the door for Foyth to leave, with Villarreal monitoring his situation.
The Argentine was left out of Mourinho's squad for the loss to Everton having fallen out of favour since the Portuguese coach replaced Mauricio Pochettino last season.
Unai Emery is open to improving his defensive options, which include four centre-backs - Pau Torres, Raul Albiol, Ramiro Funes Mori and Sofian Chakla.
"We're covered at centre-back, but the club is always looking for the chance to improve in the market," the Villarreal boss said recently.
