Villa boss MacDonald draws positives from Ireland debut

Aston Villa caretaker boss Kevin MacDonald was pleased with Stephen Ireland's debut in their thrashing at Newcastle United.

Ireland started their 6-0 drubbing on Tyneside, but did enough to impress MacDonald.

"I thought Stephen Ireland did very, very well," MacDonald told Villa's website. "He showed, actually, his level of fitness because he was still breaking past people in the Newcastle box and breaking the other way in the 90th minute - considering he has not played 90 minutes for a long time."
