Varela to be given Man Utd chance this summer

Manchester United will hand young Guillermo Varela a chance to stake a claim for the right-back spot this summer.

With Rafael expected to leave, United have been in the market to sign a new right-sided defender this summer. Therefore, it was especially surprising that the Red Devils did not make a stronger attempt to sign Liverpool-bound Nathaniel Clyne from Southampton.

Manager Louis van Gaal seems to have a plan up his sleeve though and the Manchester Evening News claim that rather than purchasing a new right-back, the Dutchman will be looking to give youngster Varela a chance to push for first-team selection during United's upcoming United States tour. Varela impressed during his loan spell at Real Madrid Castilla last season and van Gaal is looking to hand the Uruguayan a chance to impress.
