Van Gaal confirms dumping PSG midfielder Wjnaldum for Holland's Nations League squad

PSG midfielder Gini Wijnaldum faces being axed by Holland.

The Reds allowed the midfielder to leave Anfield as a free agent last summer, where he linked up with Paris Saint-Germain. The 31-year-old spent five years at Anfield, during which time he scored 22 goals in 237 appearances.

However, since his move to Paris, Wijnaldum has not enjoyed as much success as he would have envisaged. Apart from helping PSG win the Ligue 1 title, from a personal perspective he has been restricted to 36 appearances and just three goals.

Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal will drop Wijnaldum for the Nations League matches against Belgium, Wales and Poland next month.

The former Manchester United manager says dropping the ex-Liverpool midfielder is a “difficult" decision.

"Unfortunately, little has changed in Gini's situation at his club since our last two international matches in March," Van Gaal told VI.

“As a result, I am forced to make other choices, no matter how difficult and regrettable I personally find it."
