Van Dijk, Gomez return boosts Liverpool spirits despite Hertha Berlin defeat

Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez made their long-awaited returns from injury as Liverpool were beaten 4-3 by Hertha Berlin on Thursday.

Hertha took a two-goal lead within 31 minutes in Innsbruck through Santiago Ascacibar and Suat Serdar.

But the Reds fought back to level things by half-time, with Sadio Mane and Takumi Minamino getting on the scoresheet.

The second-half saw Hertha regain the lead through Stefan Jovetic who headed beyond Adrian to make 3-2.

Van Dijk and Gomez were introduced with 69 minutes on the clock, welcomed with rapturous applause from the crowd.

But van Dijk was unable to stop former Manchester City man Jovetic from restoring Hertha's two-goal advantage.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored a consolation for his side with two minutes remaining.

But this night wasn't about the result, it was about the return of Liverpool's star defenders, who missed the majority of their Premier League title defence.
