Former Real Madrid GM Jorge Valdano has revealed how he blocked Raul from quitting early in his career for Atletico Madrid.

Valdano, speaking with El Transistor, admits despite their rivalry, he has great respect for Atletico.

He recalled: "When I arrived at Real Madrid they had already signed Raúl from Atlético de Madrid, but they told me that Raúl wanted to return at some point to Atlético. But I convinced him to stay."

Valdano also stated: "The history of Atlético is a story of overcoming, it has much merit when you see how they compete with Real Madrid and Barcelona.

"I'm not from (Diego) Simeone's school but I value what he does, his leadership, the way his players follow his message."
