Real Madrid GM Jorge Valdano says they can be proud of victory at Auxerre.
Angel di Maria hit a late winner to separate the Champions League rivals.
"We suffered but I do not know if there is another team that has won away from home in the Champions League," said Valdano. "The team has made a great effort which has accumulated efforts of previous games and that has prevented freshness.
"This team when it finds the goal with the frequency of last season will find the confidence to play and suffer less."
