USA star Altidore hoping to make it work at Sunderland

Jozy Altidore is planning to return to Sunderland this week and do everything he can to work his way into the first team.

The 23-year old striker is fresh off his first goal for the USA since his double in a friendly with Nigeria in June which came prior to his injury in the opening World Cup group stage match against Ghana in Brazil.

Altidore netted in the 1-1 draw with Honduras in Boca Raton, Florida on Tuesday night and is now hoping to take that form with him back to the Stadium of Light after recently suggesting he was keen to find another club if his situation in England's north east does not improve.

The former AZ Alkmaar star has had a tough time of it recently at club level, finding it difficult to gain regular game time with the Black Cats, but plans to continue working hard as he does for the USA in order to force his way into manager Gus Poyet's plans.

"[I have to do] the same thing I have always been doing, keep plugging away and try to take my chances when they come. It is not easy, obviously, but it is what it is, the situation I am in," he said.

"I have nothing negative to say about Sunderland - I like being there, I like the fans, I enjoy the coach, I have a lot of good friends there.|

"It is just about making it work, and if not, then looking elsewhere."

Altidore will be hoping Poyet gives him a chance when Sunderland head to the Premier League's third-placed side Southampton on Saturday.
