Uruguay coach Tabarez encourages Cavani to stick with Man Utd

Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez is encouraging Edinson Cavani to sign a new contract with Manchester United.

The 34-year-old is reaching the end of a one-year contract - which United have the option of extending - and there is speculation that he wants to return to South America to play for Argentinean side Boca Juniors.

However, Depo reports Cavani's national boss Tabarez has told him the best thing to do is remain in the Premier League for one more season.

He believes that Cavani is better off trying to test himself at the highest level for as long as he can, and thinks it would make more sense to take advantage of United's offer of an extension.

After victory over Tottenham on Sunday, United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: "We have had open and honest meetings and it's no secret we want to keep him. I don't think it is any secret that this has been a difficult year for everyone.

"With the pandemic, it has not been possible to have friends over, you can't have family over without quarantine. He has not been able to experience the fantastic culture of Manchester and England and he is contemplating and thinking long and hard about what he wants to do.

"I understand. He knows what we want, I want him at Old Trafford in front of a full Stretford End scoring a header like today. Let's wait and see."
