UEFA explain handball decision in Man Utd vs PSG clash

UEFA have outlined the reasons why a penalty was given to Manchester United against Paris Saint-Germain in their round of 16 second leg clash.

A late penalty was awarded for a handball from Presnel Kimpembe, which Marcus Rashford converted to send United into the quarter finals.

There was some debate about the decision, but UEFA have released a statement reiterating why such a handball was called as a penalty. The incident drew fury from the likes of Neymar, while many pundits felt it was a harsh decision.

"Following the on-field review, the referee confirmed that the distance that the ball travelled was not short and the impact could therefore not be unexpected," a UEFA statement said.

"The defender's arm was not close to the body, which made the defender's body bigger thus resulting in the ball being stopped from travelling in the direction of the goal. The referee, therefore, awarded a penalty kick."

UEFA has given referees a mandate to deliver penalties for handballs when the player is attempting to use his arms to make their body bigger to block the ball.
