Two see red as Atletico Madrid defeat Celta Vigo

Atletico Madrid opened their LaLiga title defence by defeating Celta Vigo 2-1 on Sunday evening.

Angel Correa netted both of Los Rojiblancos' goals, while Iago Aspas scored a controversial penalty to make for a tense game that boiled over in stoppage time.

Correa finished 2020/21 really well and continued that form by netting a superb opener in the 23rd minute of this one, hitting a powerful shot that was rising and rising until it found the top corner.

Aspas cleared a Mario Hermoso effort off the line before the end of the first half, before the Galician got his first goal of 2021/22 15 minutes into the second half. The No.10 scored from the penalty spot, after a controversial handball penalty was given against Marcos Llorente, who did touch the ball with his arm but from a seemingly natural position.

Despite that setback, Atleti kept going and they retook the lead within five. Diego Simeone was preparing to take Correa off, but before the Argentine departed the field he scored what would turn out to be the winning goal, firing low and hard into the bottom corner after a brilliant pass from Saul.

Later, tensions boiled over and there was a huge brawl deep into stoppage time, with both benches clearing. Hugo Mallo and Mari Hermoso both were sent off as a result of the pushing and shoving.
