Tottenham stopper Dier claims Sporting CP star Edwards capable of England call-up

Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier believes Marcus Edwards has a chance of making the next England squad.

Edwards came through the ranks at Spurs and has since blossomed at Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon.

The 23-year-old will face Spurs when they travel to Sporting on Tuesday, and Dier has praised his former teammate ahead of the game.

"Very talented player. He's done extremely well since he arrived and he's someone we'll have to watch out for," said Dier at a pre-match press conference. "Leaving the situation at Tottenham and coming to a new country, I think he can be very proud of himself.

"He's very talented and strong and yes it would be great if he could make it to the national team. If he keeps evolving like that I'm sure he could make it to the national team."

Sporting boss Ruben Amorim also praised Edwards, adding: "Marcus is very talented. He's one of the best players in playing between the lines. He took a little while to adapt to the Portuguese lifestyle. He has all of the talent and he can get much better and get to the English national team.

"He has to focus more on training and all that is around it. Football is not just the matches, it's everything in between. I trust him a lot. He has a long way to go but I think we did excellent business in signing him."
