Tottenham breached advertising betting rules

The UK's Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has reminded Uefa Champions League finalists Tottenham Hotspur not to tweet their line-up alongside promotions for betting company William Hill if players aged under 25 feature in the matchday squad, reports, www.sportspromedia.com/.

The move comes after the UK's advertising regulator chose to investigate a tweet posted by the Premier League soccer outfit on 5th March ahead of their Champions League clash against German side Borussia Dortmund.

The tweet included photos of all 11 players in Spurs' starting line-up for that day's match, featuring 22-year-old Davinson Sanchez and 23-year-old Harry Winks, with a link through to the latest betting odds on William Hill's website.

The ASA concluded that the tweet was irresponsible and breached the CAP Code, which dictates that no individual under the age of 25 can feature in advertising for a gambling brand, except in specific circumstances where a bet can be placed directly through a transactional facility, such as on the operator's own website

As a result of the ruling, Spurs will now not show pictures of their full team in tweets promoting William Hill, which has been their betting partner since 2016. Instead, the club will tweet their line-up alongside a photo of one player who is over 25.

The ASA said in an official statement: 'The ad must not appear again in the form complained of.

'We understood the intention of the tweet was to inform the audience of the starting line-up. However, we considered that of equal measure was its aim to offer the audience an opportunity to place a bet on the match.

'In that context, while the significance of Harry Winks and Davison Sanchez was no greater than the other players in the line-up, the 11 players were the focus of the tweet, and we considered that each of them played an equally significant role in the marketing communication.'
