Tottenham boss Redknapp insists buying back Chimbonda right option

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp says circumstances forced him to buy back Pascal Chimbonda from Sunderland yesterday.

He explained: "Hutton is out long-term. If he had been fit I wouldn't have been signing a right-back.

"'Charlie' Corluka can play centre-half and I'm short there as I have only two, Jon Woodgate and Michael Dawson. Ledley King does not play as much as we want him to because of injuries.

"It's an obvious problem. So if 'Charlie' plays centre-half, I've got a lad at right-back in Gunter, who is a terrific prospect but he's young, he needs to learn the game.

"At left-back, I have the same problem. I've got a left-back in Benoit Assou-Ekotto.

"I also have Gareth Bale but no left-sided player to play in front of them now that Jamie O'Hara is out injured for quite a few weeks.

"So I just felt Chimbonda gives us cover all over. He gets forward as attacking full-back and has been outstanding at centre-back for Sunderland so I can play him anywhere across the back four.

"I wouldn't say I was getting into a mess. I took over a terrific club. We just needed to strengthen in one or two positions. We had a little bit of a bad balance."
