Tottenham boss Redknapp fears more clubs will follow Portsmouth

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp fears more clubs could go the same way as Portsmouth.

Portsmouth will learn their fate at a court hearing on March 1, but Redknapp says even Spurs rely on a wealthy benefactor and that every club runs the risk of overstretching themselves.

"So many clubs are relying on very, very wealthy owners and if they decide to pull the plug or call it a day then you end up in trouble," he said.

"That's where you're at and that's all we are relying on, people coming in who are going to keep pumping money in. There are so many clubs in that situation. When you look at Portsmouth, how many clubs at their level go and earn that sort of money out of selling players? Yet they still end up in that situation.

"West Ham made a fortune ten years ago when they sold all those kids, but since then the Icelandic people came in and then suddenly the wages mount, so what do you do?

"West Ham are only competing in the middle of the table and were still getting in trouble. It's hard. It's very difficult to get up and try to compete at the top without overstretching yourself."
