Tottenham boss Mourinho urges FA to be lenient with Alli

Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho insists any ban handed down to Dele Alli after his controversial coronavirus video would be "unnecessary".

The England star has apologised after posting a clip on Snapchat in which he suggested that an Asian man in his vicinity had the deadly virus.

He is expected to face a one-match ban from the FA, similar to the one picked up by Manchester City's Bernardo Silva following an ill-advised social media post earlier this season.

“I feel that [a ban] would be unnecessary, but in relation to these decisions, I am nobody," said Mourinho at a press conference prior to Sunday's trip to Aston Villa.

“It is unnecessary because the player understands the naivety of the situation, the player is a good guy, the player even in the dressing room has a big Asian friend that he loves.

“He learned the lesson immediately with the embarrassment. I don't feel we need more than that.

“Of course I spoke with him but for me it was quite an easy conversation because he was very sorry about the mistake.

“It was not his intention to hurt or offend. He immediately regretted it, recognised it was a young guy mistake and he apologised.

"He regrets it and to have the humility to apologise is remarkable because sometimes young people make mistakes and don't realise.

“I have a son and daughter basically the same age as Dele. I know what social media is like for this generation and when you're a public person you have to be very, very careful.
