Torino coach Ivan Juric has emerged as a candidate for the Southampton job.
Nathan Jones's dismissal was confirmed on Sunday morning, the decision being made following a 2-1 defeat to 10-man Wolves a day earlier, making his permanent managerial reign the shortest in Southampton's history.
Coach Ruben Selles will take charge of training ahead of Southampton's visit to Chelsea on Saturday and are they now looking for their third manager of the season.
They are open to appointing an overseas boss which could see a renewed move for Juric, says the Daily Mail. The Croatian has supporters among the St Mary's hierarchy who were keen to appoint him last year but he was deemed too expensive before Jones was appointed in November.
Jesse Marsch also has long-term admirers at Southampton and is available after being sacked by Leeds.
