Thompson: Ivanovic and Cahill superb for Chelsea but Hazard well below his best

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson heaped praise on Chelsea's centre-backs Gary Cahill and Branislav Ivanovic for their performances in the Blues' 2-1 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

The defenders formed an unlikely centre-back partnership in the absence of John Terry and Kurt Zouma in the Champions League Round of 16 first leg on Tuesday, which really impressed Thompson.

However, the Sky Sports analyst was not impressed with Eden Hazard and criticised him for his lack of match fitness.

"Ivanovic and Cahill were absolutely terrific," said Thompson on Sky Sports.

"(Zlatan) Ibrahimovic was alright, he caused them a lot of problems with his movement at first, but he dropped deeper and deeper, because that was the influence of Ivanovic and Cahill.

"Hazard didn't look completely fit, I don't know what he's doing in training. But he played very well, he looked up and had good control, and maybe his fitness is the reason they brought him off after 70 minutes, to get Oscar on and give them some fresh legs.

"That said, he was nothing like the Eden Hazard of last year."
