Ten players to watch for the U21 Euros: Hudson-Odoi, Rafael Leao, Puig & more

Europe's brightest young talents are set to take centre stage over the course of the next week as the U21 UEFA European Championship kicks off.

Here's a look at 10 of the best young players to keep your eyes on during the tournament's group stage:

Justin Kluivert - The Netherlands

Justin Kluivert's season has been marred with injury problems.

He's been restricted to just 5 Bundesliga starts, which has prevented him from displaying the full extent of his abilities for RB Leipzig.

However, having fully recovered from the ankle injury that put him on the sidelines, Kluivert is set to unleash his masterful technique in the U21 European Championship.

Kluivert is one of the most explosive young wingers in Europe. He boasts a tremendous presence on either flank thanks to his blistering pace. He's also very nimble on the ball as he's able to dribble past multiple players in one go.

You'd do well to keep an eye on Kluivert throughout the competition.

Sandro Tonali - Italy

Despite being just 20 years old, Tonali has been handed the difficult task of providing AC Milan's backline with defensive cover in midfield - and so far, he has not faltered in his role.

Tonali possesses a perfect balance of composure and aggression, which allows him to keep Milan's midfield on lockdown without making erratic mistakes and without giving his opponents too much leeway to get past him.

The former Brescia man has featured in 21 league games for AC Milan this season and has played a major role in their push for the Serie A title.

He's expected to be an important figure in the heart of Italy's U21 midfield.

Boubakary Soumare - France

Wanted by several giants, Soumare is set to show the world why he's sought-after by some of the biggest clubs in the European football scene.

Standing at 6'1 and boasting tremendous athleticism, Soumare is a major threat in the air. He currently averages 0.9 aerial duels won per game for Lille, who appears intent on keeping him at the club for however long they can before he's picked up by a larger outfit.

He's expected to be a standout player in France's extremely talented U21 team. You'd be wise to pay him a few glances when France takes on Denmark in their opening fixture of the U21 Euros on Thursday.

Callum Hudson-Odoi - England

Hudson-Odoi is one of the most promising young players in the Premier League. He's revered among Chelsea fans as the future of the club, and it's easy to see why when you watch him play. He's fast, strong on the ball, and he knows how to pick a pass.

Despite his limited chances this season, Hudson-Odoi has scored two goals and registered two assists in nine Premier League starts.

The 20-year-old is sure to light up the tournament with his fast footwork and creative displays, so make sure you keep your eyes on Hudson-Odoi throughout the course of the U21 tournament.

Rafael Leao - Portugal

Rafael Leao is one of the least talked about young players in Europe, yet, he's one of the most promising.

Being 6'1, he's a big and tall striker, but despite his height, he possesses sublime dribbling skills, which allows him to stand out in his opponent's half of the pitch.

Leao has scored five goals and made five assists in 18 starts for AC Milan this season. He's had the benefit of training and playing alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic, which has allowed him to grow leaps and bounds within a short space of time.

Going into the U21 Euros, he's likely to run the show for Portugal. He's an exciting player to watch, so you're unlikely to get bored at any point when he has the ball at his feet.

Borna Sosa - Croatia

Borna Sosa is Croatia's secret weapon. The 23-year-old is perfectly poised to shine in the U21 Euros the same way he's been shining in the Bundesliga for Stuttgart.

Sosa has been deployed across a variety of positions for Stuttgart this season. He's featured as a defensive midfielder, as a left-winger and as a left-back, and he's thrived in every single position, which is a testament to his versatility.

He's made eight assists in the Bundesliga and Croatia will be hoping he can replicate those stats when the U21 Euros begins.

Denis Makarov - Russia

Makarov has made eight substitute appearances in the Russian Premier League for Rubin Kazan this season and he's managed to notch four goals in those limited appearances.

He's a relatively unknown player, but he's gearing up to make his name known during the U21 Euros.

He features primarily on the right flank for Rubin Kazan, but he's also capable of playing as a striker.

It remains to be seen where he will be deployed, however, regardless of what position he plays, Makarov will be keen on making his presence felt at the Euros.

Adam Karabec - Czech Republic

Listed as part of the Guardian's 'Next-Generation' list, Adam Karabec is one of the most gifted young players in Europe at the moment.

He currently plays for Sparta Prague in the Czech first division, where he's scored two goals in four starts this season.

At 17, he's set to be one of the youngest players in the Czech U21 team, but despite his age, the midfielder is set on justifying his inclusion in the Guardian's list through a series of sublime performances at the U21 Euros.

Adam Karabec

Florian Kruger - Germany

Florian Kruger currently plies his trade in the second tier of German football for Erzgebirge Aue.

Kruger is one of the most prolific young players in the league having scored 11 goals and made six assists in 26 league games this season.

The U21 Euros will be the perfect place for him to make a name for himself and attract the interest of some Bundesliga teams, hence, he'll be looking to put up his best displays for Germany throughout the competition.

Riqui Puig - Spain

Spain has produced a long line of technically gifted midfielders over the years such as Andres Iniesta, Cesc Fabregas and Xavi to name a few.

Barcelona's Riqui Puig will be looking to join that elite list of midfielders over the course of his career, and the U21 Euros may offer him a key push in that journey.

Puig currently plies his trade for Barcelona, however, he's found playing time hard to come by ever since he got promoted to the club's first-team set-up. He's made just two starts in La Liga this season, which, for a player of his potential, can be detrimental to his growth as a footballer.

Puig will be keen to show his speed of thought as well as his incredible ball control during the tournament in a bid to attract the interest of other clubs and to prompt Ronald Koeman into offering him more playing time.
