Sydney coach Lavicka: Corica is our motivation

Sydney FC head coach Vitezslav Lavicka says the club is playing for inspirational skipper Steve Corica in the A-League finals series.

Corica, who announced his retirement last week, has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after injuring his hamstring in the final regular match last Sunday and Lavicka has confirmed that he has now become the club key motivating factor to push on and add the Championship to their Premiers' Plate, although he admitted it may be slightly tougher without Corica's influence.

"That's trouble for us because Steve is not only captain, but a skilful player and the right person on the pitch and off the pitch as well," Lavicka said.

"But football is sometimes cruel, we have to replace him and try to play well.

"We want to do it for him, this is his last season as a professional, he had a great year, great career and we want to win it for him.

"Even though we did win the minor premiership and he was a major part of that, we still want to win this and make sure that he can celebrate the same as us."

Sydney kick off their title pursuit tonight with the first leg of the major semi-final against the Melbourne Victory at Etihad Stadium.
